UK Student Visa – Overview

The UK Student Visa allows international students to study at a UK educational institution. This visa is for students aged 16 or over who have received an offer from a UK institution to study a full-time course that is eligible under the Student Route.

To qualify for a UK Student Visa, you must meet the following requirements: 

  • Offer from a licensed sponsor : You must have an unconditional offer of a place on a course with a licensed sponsor, such as a university or college.
  • Financial requirements : You must have enough money to support yourself and pay for your course. You will need to show:
    • Sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses
    • The required funds must be in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before applying.
  • English language proficiency : You must meet the English language requirement, which can usually be demonstrated by passing an approved English test
  • Genuine student requirement : You must demonstrate that you genuinely intend to study in the UK and will return home after your studies are complete. 

 

Application Process 

  1. Apply Online : Submit your application through the official UK government website. You can apply up to  6 months before your course starts .
  2. Biometric Appointment : Book and attend an appointment to provide your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph). This will be done at a visa application centre or an authorised location.
  3. Submit Required Documents : You’ll need to submit supporting documents such as your passport, proof of financial means, and your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from your sponsor.
  4. Decision : A decision on your application should be made within  8 weeks . You’ll receive a decision letter and, if granted, a vignette (sticker) in your passport. 

 

Required Documents 

You’ll need to provide the following documents when applying for a Student Visa: 

  • A valid passport or travel document.
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your UK sponsor institution.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds (bank statements or financial sponsorship details).
  • Proof of English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS score).
  • Proof of parental or legal guardian consent if you are under 18. 
  • Tuberculosis (TB) test results (if applicable).  

     

Costs 

It costs: 

  • £524 to apply for a Student visa from outside the UK
  • £524 to extend or switch to a Student visa from inside the UK 

You must pay the visa fee for each person that joins you. 

 

Dependants 

If you are a full-time student at postgraduate level (Master’s or above) or are doing a course that lasts  12 months or more , you may be eligible to bring your partner and children (dependants) to the UK with you. Your dependants will need to submit a separate visa application and provide proof of sufficient funds. 

Stay After Studies 

  • Working Rights : As a student visa holder, you are allowed to work in the UK while studying:
    • You can work up to 20 hours per week during term-time, and full-time during holidays.
    • If your course is at degree level or higher, you may be able to work full-time after completing your studies (if eligible for a Graduate Visa).
  • Post-Graduation : After completing your studies, if you wish to remain in the UK to work, you may be eligible to apply for a  Graduate Visa (formerly known as the PSW – Post-Study Work Visa), which allows you to stay for  2 years (or 3 years for PhD graduates) to find work at the required skill level.
